Durba springs is situated in the Great Sandy desert in WA. The Martu people are the traditional owners of the springs. When travelling through the Great Sandy desert one of the toughest places to travel on the planet. It is mind blowing when you suddenly enter the strange rock formation of the Durba Hills and find this abundant supply of fresh water. Behind the eerie tree is a crack in the rock far back in a crevice which lets a slither of light through, making this amazing scene.

Mount Oxley is situated a few kms east of Bourke, NSW Oxley has 360 degree views to the horizon in this vastly flat outback environment. It’s flat top consisting of ancient rock and red soil some information on the strange craters on top of the mountain can be found at Vandaart on instagram. This painting is looking directly south from top of the mountain.

Walking through this hill country with its ancient Spanish oaks and its 15th century features, it had a real medieval time-warp about it. We came across the Christian Camino artist Arthur on the side of the road and had a pleasant time with him in his barn which he had renovated into his home , studio and gallery.

I had the opportunity in 2012 to dive on the Fin Reef, the outer edge of the Great Barrier Reef. A mind blowing environment, just one of the places under great threat from human activity. After spending a few hours in the water the visual feast got too much and I was exhausted by just gazing. Painting this environment was difficult, I have attempted to capture the intense visual drama, of colour, light and activity.

While spending three weeks travelling through four of the Australian deserts I only came across a cluster of grass trees once. This iconic Australian native has many species from Bruny Island, Southern Tasmania, to the far north of this country. This plant is significant in the culture of the Australian indigenous people.

I enjoy painting the arid Australian landscapes because of the colours.

The bight runs from east to west across the bottom of the Australian continent for 1,160kms with cliffs up to 120m high. The Bight has a reputation for storms and rough seas. The barren coast was surveyed by Matthew Flinders in 1802.

Walking the ancient Roman road high on the Mesa above the town of Castrojeriz, Spain.

I considered this part of the Camino pilgrimage (800km walk) one of the highlights of the journey. Walking on this ancient road with this spacious dry environment which hasn’t changed over 2000 years quite humbling.
