FIN REEF
Artist quality acrylic on timber panel
Sealed with a satin finish
355 x 280mm
I had the opportunity in 2012 to dive on the Fin Reef, the outer edge of the Great Barrier Reef. A mind blowing environment, just one of the places under great threat from human activity. After spending a few hours in the water the visual feast got too much and I was exhausted by just gazing. Painting this environment was difficult, I have attempted to capture the intense visual drama, of colour, light and activity.
“Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundations? Tell me, if you understand. Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched the measuring line across it? On what were its footings set, or who laid its cornerstone while the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy? Who shut up the sea behind doors when it burst forth from the womb, when I made the clouds its garment and wrapped it in thick darkness when I fixed limits for it and set the doors and bars in place, when I said, This far you may come and no further, here is where proud waves halt?” Job 38
